Bhikkhu Bodhipala : Ven. Dhammaviriyo Mahathera, the Sanghanayaka of the All India Bhikkhu Sangha attained death this morning at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where he was admitted since the last few weeks. He was 80 years of age.
Born in Memu, Myanmar to a family from Chittagong he came to Kolkata at a very young age. A vibrant young monk, he was endowed with great qualities and his charming attributes helped him to engage himself for many social causes.
He started the Kripasaran Buddhist Mission in Darjeeling, Sikkim and Duttapukur ( 24 Parganas N) by usurping the Darjeeling Center of the Buddha Dharmankur Sabha which he used as a temporary shelter for the children’s home. He contributed his mite in the development of many Buddhist Viharas in different places. He held important positions during his long public career. He was a Member of the National Commission for Minorities, Chairman of TRIFED, Govt. of India and Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. He was the Sanghanayaka of the All India Bhikkhu Sangha. Credit goes to him for construction of the bulidings of the All India Bhikkhu Sangha.
His was a very eventful life. He could have achieved much more had he been more constructive and supporter of the young and the upcoming monks but he believed in doing it alone for which he had to always step back. All his institutions are today gasping for breath except for one. Had he worked in unision all his dreams would have seen the light of the day. He was a good starter but was not meant for the long haul and thus was not a good finisher.
On his death we have lost a personality who could have gone down in history as a great but will be recalled for his misses than the hits. We should all take a lesson from his life and make corrections in our life and work culture and our attitude towards the brother monks.
May he be well and happy wherever he is.
May you be free from all sufferings.
May you attain Nibbana.
